How to Make Flowers Last Longer

How to Make Flowers Last Longer

Flowers are a common gift for special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, wedding anniversaries, graduation ceremonies, and even Mother’s Day. However, most flowers do not last forever but there are methods that could be used to ensure the longevity of flowers.

  1. Cut the stems

People often forget to cut off the stem of the flowers after purchasing them. Use garden shears to trim off one or two inches and make sure to cut it at an angle as it allows for better water intake. It is also important to consistently trim them every few days.

  1. Add a packet of flower food to the water

After purchasing flowers, it usually comes with a packet of flower food to place in the water of your vase. However, you can also make your own by adding three tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to warm water in your vase. This will help nourish the flowers and maintain fresh blooms.

  1. Avoid direct sunlight

It would be advisable to place the flowers away from direct sunlight or near any appliances that may generate heat. Once a flower has been cut, any direct sunlight or heat would result in premature browning and wilting.

  1. Remove lower leaves

It is important to cut off and remove any leaves that are below the water line in the vase. Leaving it in the water would be detrimental to the flower as it contaminates the water with bacteria.
